mix for ferry rides
Lucrecia Dalt, Joe Hisaishi, Piry Reis, Saint Etienne, Etta James, Harvey Fuqua, Otis Redding
Hello, happy Monday. This was a request from the chat, but this substack is also morphing into various transportation playlists. I love ferries, especially the Star Ferry in Hong Kong, which I used to ride back and forth instead of doing my studio work when I had zoom school— definitely the better use of my time.
*To play the full songs listed below, I recommend viewing this post on substack on a computer.*
This week, so many great tracks, have been looking forward to this for a while; experimental musician Lucrecia Dalt returns to her memories of growing up in Colombia in her latest album, ¡Ay!; Joe Hisaishi’s overlooked soundtrack to Porco Rosso, which admittedly has more planes than ferries (and who I am seeing in July!); a track by Brazilian guitarist Piry Reis which I found on this excellent compilation from Music from Memory; what I think is the best track on Foxbase Alpha by Saint Etienne (whose songs have been remixed by legends of the electronic scene, Autechre, Aphex Twin, Andrew Weatherall etc), Kylie Minogue covered this song as well; then we have THE Etta James (whose other more famous song was BLASTED at a Theo Parrish set I went to this month, mindblowing); and how could I not include Otis Redding’s dock of the bay song (funnily heard from Wim Wender’s Perfect Days).
No tiempo - Lucrecia Dalt
The Savoia in the Clouds - Joe Hisaishi
O Sol Na Janela - Piry Reis
Nothing Can Stop Us - Saint Etienne
My Heart Cries (Single Version) - Etta James, Harvey Fuqua
(Sittin’ On) the Dock of the Bay - Otis Redding
*streaming can be a great, accessible way to discover new music and an easy way for me to embed playlists into my posts, but I would encourage, if possible, supporting the artists through other platforms and exploring the rest of their work*
